Industrial Chemistry
Important raw materials

The following are important raw materials for chemical industry.

  1. Coal:

The destructive distillation of coal produces useful products such as coke, coal tar, coal gas and ammoniacal liquor which is used to generate products like plastics, dyes, explosives, water gas, producer gas, e.t.c.

  2. Limestone:

Limestone, Calcium trioxocarbonate (IV) is a notable industrial raw material used in the production of concrete and cements. It also supplies carbon (II) oxide used industrially in solvay process for the production of sodium trioxocarbonate (IV) which is used to soften hard water and also used as a raw material in making glass.

  3. Air:

Air consists of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.03% carbon (IV) oxide, 1% rare gases. Oxygen is useful for the production of oxyacetylene flames which is used to cut and weld metals. Nitrogen is used in the manufacture of ammonia in the haber process Ammonia is used in making fertilizers. Rare gases like radon is used in the pharmaceutical industry for the treatment of cancer.

  4. Petroleum:

Petroleum is an important raw material for the production of fuels and petrochemicals like detergents, paints, e.t.c

  5. Sodium Chloride

Sodium chloride is used industrially to produce sodium hydroxide which is used in the manufacture soaps and in the paper and textile industry. Sodium chloride also produces hydrogen snd chlorine.

  6. Sulphur:

Sulphur is obtained from underground deposits. It is used for medicinal purposes and also in the production of fertilizers, paints and dyes.

Siting a chemical Industry

The following should be considered when siting a chemical industry

  1. Proximity to raw materials and feedstocks
  2. Access to transportation infrastructure (roads, rails, ports)
  3. Availability of utilities (water, electricity, steam)
  4. Environmental regulations and permitting requirements
  5. Distance from residential areas and population centers
  6. Geological stability and seismic activity
  7. Climate and weather patterns (temperature, humidity, wind)
  8. Availability of skilled labor and training resources
  9. Proximity to emergency services and healthcare facilities
  10. Opportunities for waste management and recycling
